Yellow Brotherhood Celebrates Video Project
An intergenerational gathering of former and current
members of the Yellow Brotherhood Organization took place on Saturday evening,
November 27, at Centenary United Methodist Church.
The “YB,” in reference to its symbolic initials, was
founded in 1969 in the Crenshaw area of Los Angeles, to provide guidance and
support to sansei youths who had become entrapped by the gang and drug culture
of 60’s era society. Since then, YB has continued to be a community based
organization that reaches across ethnic and generational boundaries.
Highlighting the evening was the video preview of “Yellow
Brotherhood,” a film by Tadashi H. Nakamura, which he produced in conjunction
with the Center For Ethnocommunications.
“Yellow Brotherhood isn’t an organization, it’s an
attitude,” explained the younger Nakamura as he expanded on his film during a
discussion. Art Ishii, a founding member, reflected that one of the qualifications for YB membership was that
“you had to have a chip on your shoulder.”
Special recognition was given to several individuals for
their significant contributions in helping YB get started. Joe Yamagawa and
Kenwood Jung were presented with special awards for helping the group plant its
roots.
A special appreciation was accorded to Centenary United
Methodist Church, for allowing the YB to meet in its social hall during its
start-up days. “Many churches would not allow us to come in and meet, but
Centenary took the risk and let us use them,” remarked co-founding member
Victor Shibata.
On hand to witness these remarks were Mark Kiguchi,
attorney at law who was Centenary Board of Trustees Chairman at that time, and
Bishop Roy I. Sano., who was an associate pastor at Centenary UMC during the
late 60’s
